It just isn’t the holiday season at Metropolitan Market without The Holiday Pear, the sweetest, creamiest pear you’ll ever eat—in fact, it’s so creamy that a spoon will cut through it as easy as butter.

We don’t want to say we’re picky, but we’re after only the very best pears. Our famous pears come to us from the most well-established farms in Oregon’s Rogue River Valley, where the cool nights balance out warm days, and the clay soil makes for great-tasting pears. One particular third-generation family farm there has perfected their growing techniques over the past 100 years to produce some of the most delicious we’ve ever tasted—beautifully-aromatic, alluring, and sweet.

We get first pick of the entire crop each year, and only about 3 percent are up to our size standards. Bigger means sweeter, and that’s what we bring to our stores.

The work doesn’t stop after the pears have been picked: The Holiday Pears are then cold-conditioned for months, a process that breaks down the fruit’s starch and turns it to sugar. Meanwhile, we test daily for sugar content, making sure the pears are just right and ripe, before they make the careful journey to our stores, where we continue to check them constantly for perfect flavor. That’s the difference: It’s not just the variety, but the time and care we invest in the pears after they’re picked.
